Abstract
This research examines the comparison of features of women’s and men’s language. Then, it looks at the function of women’s language features, as used by a transgender character named Einar Wegener in The Danish Girl movie. This movie tells the story of Einar Wegener, who felt he was a woman trapped in a man’s body, and then he decided to become transgender. This movie is set in the 1920s when transgender was still taboo. From this phenomenon, the researcher answered the problem formulation in this research, namely (1) The comparison of women’s language features and men’s language features in the transgender character named Einar Wegener (Lili Elbe) and (2) The function of women’s language features used by Einar Wegener (Lili Elbe) in the movie The Danish Girl. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to investigate women’s language features and functions used by Einar Wegener (Lili Elbe), a transgender character in The Danish Girl movie. Data was collected from the movie script, which was then analyzed and identified the features of women’s language used by Einar Wegener (Lili Elbe) in the movie, which was then compared with men’s language features used to find out which language features were dominant, this was aimed at answering the first problem formulation. For the second problem formulation, the researcher answered by explaining the function of the dominant language features, namely women’s language features. This research revealed that women’s language features are more prevalent than men's in Einar Wegener (Lili Elbe). Before becoming Lili, Einar used 50% of women's language features; after that, he used 94% of women’s language features, while men's language was found in one data. Also, this research revealed that 77% of his language was expressive, 30% referential, and 10% poetic. Expressive features included tag questions, lexical hedges, emphatic stress, and hypercorrect grammar. Thus, Einar Wegener, a transgender male, used more women's language features than men's to express himself and showcase his feminine side.
