Abstract

This study aims to examine the slang words used by teenagers in Indonesia that are used on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. This study has two research question formulations that must be answered: (1) What types of slang do Indonesian teenagers use on social media, and (2) What slang functions are included in the slang words used by Indonesian teenagers on social media. This study used theory from Allan & Burridge (2006) to analyze the types of slang words and theory from Hymes (1989) to analyze the functions of using slang. This study involved a qualitative approach because it was carried out using a descriptive form of written language. A descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this research to analyze slang words on social media, where the main subject is teenagers, who in their comments often use slang. After analyzing the types of slang words, the analysis is continued by giving an identification of the meaning of slang words to explain them in more detail. The results of the study show that five types of slang words (fresh and creative, acronym, imitative, flippant, and clipping) and six functions of slang (to address a speaker, to form intimate atmosphere, to initiate relax conversation, to show intimacy, to reveal anger and humiliate functions) are found on Instagram and Twitter. From the appearance of these slang words, teenagers tend to use slang words that include fresh and creative. They use it when interacting with fellow social media users to make it seem more familiar. Also common among teens used "acronyms" and "clippings" in comments. As a reason, teenagers often use English vocabulary in the form of word fragments or abbreviations, namely "clipping" which seems slang. The readers will understand this thesis more clearly as a result of the explanation given.
