Abstract

Technological advancements allow the lecturers to use internet-based applications as media to teach listening skills because it is essential in a TOEFL test. Two research questions were investigated in this study: 1) What internet-based applications are used by the lecturer to teach listening skills in a TOEFL preparation class? 2) How does the lecturer implement internet-based applications to teach listening skills in a TOEFL preparation class? For that purpose, the researcher employed a qualitative research method. The researcher conducted classroom observations to describe the implementation of internet-based applications to teach listening skills. An interview with the lecturer of the English intensive program (IBI) of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, was also conducted to support the data from the observations. This study's findings demonstrated that: 1) The lecturer utilized three kinds of internet-based applications to teach listening skills: YouTube, Listening Lab, and British Council podcast. 2) Regarding the implementation of its application, the data from observations revealed that the lecturer implemented the applications during the while-listening and post-listening stages. Furthermore, there are various listening exercises or activities when the lecturer implements those applications. This study suggests that using internet-based applications as media is a great way to provide students with a variety of listening experiences. Therefore, it is highly recommended that other lecturers or teachers help students practice their listening skills with internet-based applications.
