Abstract

Getting a novelty topic is not that easy without any discussion between students and teachers. Besides discussing with the teacher, the feedback from the teacher is also important especially for the students to guide shaping the novelty of a topic in a research. Thereby, this qualitative study aimed to identify the various kinds of teachers’ feedback for the students' research proposal draft and to investigate the students’ way to pinpoint the novelty of the research from the teachers’ feedback. To collect those data, the researcher distributed a set of questionnaires and conducted an interview with students from the English Language Education Department at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya who have discussed the novelty of the research and completed the Research Proposal Seminars class B in the academic year 2020-2021. The finding showed that the most often feedback received by the students is facilitative feedback. While, they are definitely happier if the teacher also delivers praise feedback to boost up their motivation. Moreover, students stated that they mostly employed the feedback information in order to find novelty through teacher’s feedback. In addition, after receiving the feedback from the teacher on the proposal draft, the very first thing that needs to be done is to review the feedback from the teacher. The second step that should be taken is to identify areas that need to be improved. Finally, the last step in the process is to execute and implement the plan that has been developed.
