Abstract

This study aims to identify the slang words used by father characters in the movie Old Dads, highlighting the phenomenon of fathers adopting unconventional slang typically associated with younger generations. These characters blend informal expressions with their roles as fathers and their daily interactions, creating a unique communication dynamic. This research addresses two main questions: (1) What types of slang are used by the father characters in the movie Old Dads (2) How does the function of slang used by the father characters in the movie Old Dads. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, emphasizing a systematic and detailed exploration of the observed phenomena. Data were collected by transcribing dialogues from the movie. The data were then analyzed to classify slang types based on Eric Partridge’s theory and to identify their communicative functions. Contextual analysis was conducted to understand why specific strategies were employed based on conversational settings. The findings reveal that several types of slang are present in the movie, including society slang, public house slang, and underworld slang, with society slang being the most prevalent. The use of slang functions as a tool to break formal barriers, foster emotional connections, and create a relaxed atmosphere in family and social interactions. Additionally, the slang used by the father characters challenges traditional stereotypes of detached and rigid father figures, portraying a more modern role characterized by warmth, closeness, and familiarity. This study provides valuable insights into the evolving role of fathers in contemporary family communication dynamics.
