Abstract

This research aims to develop Arabic companion books designed to improve Arabic language skills (listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, and writing skills) of grade 10 students at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Surabaya City. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the Addie model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The analysis stage is carried out to identify the needs and problems faced by students in learning Arabic. The data and data sources of this study are adjusted to the stages of the development research model used, the researcher uses the results of the student Pretest and Posttest, student responses, and teacher responses related to companion books as the main data which aims to determine the effectiveness of the developed books. Based on the results of the analysis, the design of the companion book is designed by paying attention to the needs of students and the applicable curriculum. The development of companion books is carried out by integrating materials that are in accordance with the level of understanding of students and the presentation of the material in this companion book presented in the concept of mutholaah or repetition of material in each Arabic language skill. After that, companion books are implemented in the learning process in grade 10 of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Surabaya, especially in grade 10-K majoring in religion. The evaluation was carried out to measure the effectiveness of companion books in improving students' Arabic language skills (listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills, and writing skills). The results of the study showed a significant improvement in students' Arabic language skills. The average pretest result of 55 increased to 73 in the posttest, which shows a significant improvement in Arabic comprehension and mastery. In addition, as many as 82% of students responded positively to the existence of Arabic companion books. This shows that the companion book developed is effective in improving students' Arabic language skills and has received a positive response from students.
