Abstract

This study aims to analyze the speech style used by the main characters, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnet, in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which shows the use of speech style variations in various social and emotional situations between characters. The focus of this research is to identify how speech styles are used to build relationships between characters, convey emotions, and support the storyline in this action-comedy movie. There are two problems to be discussed in this study; (1) what speech styles are used by the main characters in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die based on Joos' framework; (2) what are the social factors in Holmes' framework that influence the use of the main character's speech style in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die. This research employs a qualitative approach because it enables the researcher to provide a clear and systematic description of the stylistic phenomena under study. The type of research employed is a descriptive study with a contextual analysis of conversations between the main characters in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Data was collected by searching for transcript files of all conversations from the film, then sorting out the utterances made by the main characters. The transcription was then analyzed by identifying the types of speech styles based on Martin Joos' theory and labelling each utterance according to its category. Furthermore, the researcher analyses the use of speech styles by considering social factors such as participants, topics, functions, and settings based on Janet Holmes' theory, to find out how and why certain styles are used in certain conversational contexts. This research shows that the main characters in the movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die use four of the five speech styles according to Martin Joos' theory, namely frozen, consultative, casual, and intimate. The casual style is the most dominant because it reflects the familiarity between characters through casual conversations, full of humor, and non-standard language, following the characteristics of action-comedy genre movies. A consultative style is used in professional situations, such as mission coordination, while an intimate style appears in emotional conversations between characters who have a close relationship. The frozen style only appears once in the context of a wedding ceremony because it is very formal and rigid. The choice of speech style is influenced by social factors according to Janet Holmes' theory, namely participants, topic, function, and setting. These factors determine the form of communication used and reflect the closeness, social roles, and emotions in the relationship between characters, thus strengthening the plot and characterization in the movie.
