Abstract
This study aims to discuss how the main character, Hana, experienced challenges related to her gender and how she dealt with them throughout the novel. The researcher addresses two primary questions, namely: (1) How does Hana experience challenges as a woman in Uzma Jalaluddin’s Hana Khan Carries On? (2) How does Hana deal with the challenges in Uzma Jalaluddin’s Hana Khan Carries On? This study uses a qualitative approach with the use of a description of the phenomenon being studied. This qualitative method analyzes the main character’s experiences by explaining the narratives and dialogues from the novel. The researcher uses the data from the narratives and dialogues of the characters from the novel. The data were collected by first reading the novel. The researcher identified and took notes on Hana Khan’s experience in dealing with issues related to her gender and how she overcame them in the novel that followed the research focus. The researcher classified the data that had been collected according to the issues raised in this research. The analysis was continued by identifying Hana’s challenges as a woman and how she dealt with the problems. This study reveals that Hana often faces various forms of challenges and can deal with them. The challenges that Hana faces are in the form of familial expectations and discrimination or racism. Hana experiences pressure to meet the expectations placed on her as a woman. As a daughter in her family, she is also required to balance her responsibilities and the career she is pursuing. Apart from that, she experiences discrimination at her workplace by her own co-workers. She also experiences racism from strangers in public places. She also experiences acism from strangers in public places. However, Hana managed to overcome her challenges as a woman. Hana can prove that she is an independent Muslim woman. She also overcame discrimination by proving that she can have the same capacity in the professional space.
