Abstract

Teaching English to young learners educates students aged 5 until 12 years old. In teaching them, English teachers should have pedagogical and content knowledge skills. This qualitative study aims to identify the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of EYL teachers who have an English educational background and EYL teachers who have an early childhood educational background. To answer this issue, this study interviewed two EYL teachers having an English educational background and an early childhood educational background as well as observed their classes. The findings showed that the teachers with English background and early childhood educational background have sufficient knowledge on their pedagogical knowledge and content knowledge concepts. This means that they know how to face their students, understand the concepts of teaching and are able to communicate effectively. They are also able to apply their pedagogical skills during the teaching and learning process for example by giving clear and simple instructions, monitoring their students to check their students’ understanding and difficulties, setting and adjusting the teaching and learning time, giving feedback to their students, able to teach with some and whole English skills and language components, showing positive behaviors in understanding their students’ characteristics, interacting with the students, motivating students with positive talk, consistent to speak in English and bilingual when teach their students, creating a lesson plan, preparing the things that will need in the English lesson, creating and preparing students’ assignment with giving worksheet or in the students sources, creating and preparing students’ assessment in middle test and final test, solving the students’ problems, and aware to their students’ characteristics and students’ abilities in learning English.
