Abstract
This study aims to analyze conversational implicature highlighting the feeling of unappreciated love efforts in five popular selected song lyrics. These song lyrics are “Tolerate it,” “Enough for you,” “Set fire to the rain,” “The Greatest,” and “Die on This Hill.” Furthermore, it brings this study into two reaearch questions, which are: (1) What types of conversational implicatures are found in the five selected song lyrics about unappreciated love efforts? and (2) How do conversational implicatures convey the feeling of being unappreciated in the selected song lyrics? This study uses qualitative descriptive method to capture rich and detailed meaning through the context from the hearer’s perspective about emotional feeling of being unappreciated in song lyrics, specifically, in romantic relationship. The data were collected by compiling a list of popular songs with the theme of unappreciated love, selecting five popular songs that rich in figurative and indirect expressions, listening and cross-checking to ensure textual accuracy, annotating the lyrics that potentially has the implied meaning, and the last was examining each annotated line and determining whether it fulfills the criteria of conversational implicature or not. This study then founds both types of conversational implicature, which are generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. However, the findings shows that particularized conversational implicature is the dominan type found in this research. From these findings, it can be concluded that the artists prefer to convey the expression of unappreciated love using indirect statements than straight to the literal meaning. Moreover, this study reveals some expressions of unappreciated love, such as self-sacrifice, emotional neglect, unreciprocated effort, and tolerance toward hurtful behavior.
