Abstract

Reading is important for English language ability, one of them is that reading can increase students’ vocabulary. Through extensive reading activities the students can gain benefits to increase their vocabulary knowledge. This study will present the benefits of extensive reading toward other language skills. This study also aims to explore students' perspective regarding extensive reading experience in increasing vocabulary. Furthermore, this study also aims to find out the strategies students use to improve their vocabulary through extensive reading. This study uses a qualitative approach with a narrative research design to study students' experiences and perspectives comprehensively. Data was collected through data selection used to select participants and then conducting in-depth interviews to explore the data further. The results of the data collection were analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants of this study were English education students from the class of 2021 who had experience in doing extensive reading independently at UINSA. The results of this study show that students have a positive view of extensive reading in improving vocabulary. Students said that extensive reading can help them acquire new vocabulary through exposure to many texts and can also improve other language skills. The strategies often used by students to improve vocabulary through extensive reading are guessing from context and noticing. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that extensive reading is an approach that greatly helps students improve their vocabulary and language skills.
