Abstract

Language has a very important role in the communication process. In pragmatics, cooperation principles are certain rules that must be obeyed by speakers or listeners in communication. Unfortunately, some people still often violate the rules of the maxims which might cause misunderstandings in communication. These maxims are the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relationship, and maxim of manner which are in accordance with the theory proposed by Grice (1975). This study has two problem formulations, namely: 1.) What are the types of maxim violations used by the characters in the movie Taken (2009)? and 2.) What are the functions of the maxim violations committed by the characters in the movie Taken (2009)? . From the research questions, the purpose of this research is to find out the types and the functions of violating the maxims carried out by the characters in Taken movie (2009). This research applied textual analysis because this research focused on analyzing data that contains deep meaning and involves interpretation in a context. The data for this research are taken from the characters' conversations in Taken movie (2009) which lasts 1 hour 33 minutes. Based on the analyzed data, the result shows that the characters in the Taken movie violated all types of maxims. There are four types of maxim violations committed by the characters, these are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. In addition, the researcher also analyzed the functions of the characters in violating the maxims, these are hiding the real information, influencing the speech partner, convincing, and changing the topic of conversation. From the data that has been analyzed, the type of maxim that is most often violated by the characters is the maxim of quality with the function of hiding the real information. The researcher concluded that from the analysis that has been done, the characters in the Taken movie violated all types of maxims that have been theorized by Grice (1975) with a total of 41 maxims. The researcher also identified the functions of the characters in violating the maxims. This function is analyzed by finding out the motives hidden by the characters in violating the maxim. These functions are to hide the real information from the speech partner, to build trust, to convincing, and to change the topic of conversation. For future researchers who want to examine the principle of cooperation in communication, the researcher suggests using other objects or theory and conducting an analysis that has never been done regarding cooperative principle and comparing it with this research in the future.
