Developing Graded English Narrative Comis as Instructional Media for Learners With Different Readiness Levels.

The application of technology in today’s era plays a crucial role in education, particularly in creating differentiated learning materials. This study aims to develop graded narrative comics as a learning tool to facilitate students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition based on their varying levels of readiness. There are two research questions posed in this study: (1) What are the procedures of developing graded English narrative comics as instructional media for learners with different readiness? (2) How is the feasibility of graded English narrative comics as instructional media for learners with different readiness levels?. This study followed a research and development approach using the ADDIE model, employing interviews, questionnaires, and validation sheets as data collection instruments. One English teacher (a learning practitioner), 6 experts (2 media experts, 2 content experts, and 2 English teachers or practitioners), and 33 students from Class VIII C at SMP 26 Surabaya participated in this study. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) This study involves conducting a needs analysis, designing the product, developing the product, implementing the product, and evaluating the product. (2) Quantitative analysis of the validation and student responses also indicates that the comic-based learning material developed is highly practical for addressing gaps in understanding of the subject matter caused by differences in students’ readiness levels, taking into account aspects of validity and practicality. This study offers several recommendations for teachers and students regarding the implementation of graded comic-based learning materials as an alternative teaching tool capable of addressing the diversity of student abilities within the classroom.
