Abstract

This research discussed the expressive acts used by the main characters in “Instant Family” movies. This movie tells about a married couple who decided to adopt three kids with different personalities. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) What are the types of expressive acts found in the Instant Family movie, and (2) How are the expressive acts conveyed, directly or indirectly. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were collected by watching and transcribing the “Instant Family” movie. The researcher becomes the main instrument of this study to collect and analyze the data. After collecting the data, the researcher identified the utterances of the main characters of the “Instant Family” movie that indicates the types of expressive acts by highlighting the main characters' utterances. Then the researcher analyzed the utterances produced by the main characters. The main characters are Pete, Ellie, Lizzy, Juan, and Lita. The researcher used Searle's (1976) theory to analyze the data. The result showed that the researcher found six types of expressive acts performed by the “Instant Family” main characters. There are 122 data of the expressive acts produced by the main characters. Those types are 1 data of expressive wishing, 26 data of expressive thanking, 37 data of expressive apologizing, 35 data of expressive greetings, 16 data of expressive complaining, and 7 data of expressive disagreeing. Meanwhile, the expressive act of congratulating did not come up in the utterance of the main characters. From all the types that have been mentioned, the expressive of apologizing becomes the most dominant used by the main characters because they are new to each other, so there is a fear of making the other uncomfortable with what they are doing or talking about. Furthermore, this story is about adopting children, which means they do not know each other very well and still need to be closer like a family. Moreover, the researcher found that most of the main characters conveyed their expressive acts in a direct way.
