Abstract

This study aims to investigate how China’s Powers are represented in Zhang Yimou's “The Great Wall” Movie, especially in the context of hegemony and power relations. Therefore, the author answered the formulation of the problems in this study How are China’s powers represented in the narration of Zhang Yimou's "The Great Wall” movie.This research used descriptive qualitative research design to obtain benefits and in-depth insights into understanding and analyzing all information related to the discourse of selected narration. Based on the research objectives, qualitative research aims to understand and analyze the narration of dialogue contained in “The Great Wall” movie. Data was collected by first writing and taking the narration and dialogue in the movie. The transcripts were then analyzed by examining the initial dimensions of Fairclough's three-dimensional framework, namely textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice.The research findings show that China has 3 kinds of powers, there are (1) military, strategy and weapons, (2) intellectual and moral leadership, and (3) cultural dominations. The result found 13 data are 5 data for military, strategy and weapons, 5 data for intellectual and moral leadership, and 3 data for cultural dominations. The analysis also involves the dialogue between the characters to strengthen the textual analysis and provide a picture of the screenshot from movie scenes for an easier understanding of the powers of China.
