Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the use of language styles by the three main characters in the Fast Five movie, namely Dominic Toretto, Brian O’Connor, and Agent Hobbs. In addition, this research also explored the underlying factors for the main characters to use language styles. There were two problems to be solved in this research, namely: 1. What language styles were used by the main characters in the Fast Five movie?; 2. What factors influenced the use of language styles by the main characters? To show how the characters utilized language styles and to determine the factors influencing the main characters until they changed language styles when interacting. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach that was clear and systematic regarding the phenomenon studied. A descriptive study in the form of textual analysis was used in this research to analyze the utterances of the three main characters of this movie through the movie script transcript. All necessary data were collected beforehand by watching the Fast Five movie and matching the conversations in the scenes with the script transcript. The data were then analyzed by identifying the types of language styles according to Martin Joos's theory and categorized into the appropriate types. The analysis continued by investigating the factors influencing the use of language styles by the main characters in the dialogues. This research proved that there were four out of five types of language styles used by the three main characters. The casual style data amounted to 24, consultative style data amounted to 9, formal style data amounted to 8, intimate style data amounted to 5, and frozen style data amounted to 0. The three main characters of this movie used casual style more frequently when communicating. The dominance of that style indicated that casual style functioned as a tool for the main characters to communicate with fellow members, who had close bonds as friends and family. The absence of the use of frozen style indicated that the context occurring in the movie did not require the use of rigid language. This research also proved that the factors influencing the three main characters to use those language styles were based on the relationship between the speaker and the listener, and were also based on the physical setting where the communication took place.
