Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the transition of belief of Susan and Edmund in the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, using the presupposition theory by George Yule (1996) and the SPEAKING model by Dell Hymes (1974). The movie tells the story of how the Pevensie siblings discover a magical land inside a wardrobe and must fulfil their destiny as humans who are being foretold to save Narnia. Since the movie is set in two completely different worlds, many presuppositions emerge from characters who come from different backgrounds. In this study, there are two questions to be answered by the researcher: (1) what types of presuppositions are found in the utterances of the movie based on Yule’s classification theory; (2) How do Susan’s and Edmund’s beliefs change due to the contextual development of presuppositions by using the SPEAKING model. This study used a qualitative method with a textual analysis approach, where the research data was taken from dialogues by Susan and Edmund in the movie that contained presuppositions and showed indications of changes in their belief systems. The data analysis was conducted by first classifying the types of presuppositions that emerged, and then analyzing their context using the SPEAKING model, which consist of setting, scene, participants, ends, act sequences, key, instrumentalities, norms, and genre. The SPEAKING model identifies the factors that influenced the characters’ acceptance or rejection of common ground. The results of the study revealed that five types of presuppositions appeared in the movie, which were dominated by existential presuppositions. This dominance served as an indicator that Susan and Edmund acknowledge the existence or entities within the world of Narnia. Furthermore, the results showed that Susan and Edmund experienced different processes in the transition of their beliefs regarding Narnia and the prophecy that related to them. Susan’s transition of belief fluctuated as she experienced progress and regression in acknowledging existence, whereas Edmund’s transition was influenced by the specific character. Additionally, this study found that Susan and Edmund experienced the formation of common ground through a process called presupposition as accommodation by Von Fintel (2008). From the overall analysis, it could be concluded that the transitions of Susan’s and Edmund’s beliefs occurred due to the process of forming new common ground, which could be observed through the use of language triggers in the presuppositions.
