Abstract
This study is conducted to analyze conversational strategies.Unconsciously, many people don’t know what conversational strategies are but they certain use conversational strategies in their conversation. It is reason why the writer studies conversational strategies. In this research, the writer focuses on utterance that used between Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong. This study is divided into two research problems. First, what are the conversational strategies used between Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong in The Oprah Winfrey Show. Second, what are the functions of the conversational strategies used between Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong in The Oprah Winfrey Show.
In this study the writer uses theory from Jennifer Coates (2004), she stated that there are seven conversational strategies, they are minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, directives, swearing and taboo language and compliments. To reveal the statement of the problems, the writer uses corpus for counting the total emergence every conversational strategies.
The writer finds all of conversational strategies in the data. Although every strategies occur in the data but the emergence of every strategies is different. Minimal responses appear in total number one hundred and ten, total emergence of hedges is forty two while tag question appears in total two. Next, there are one hundred and three times occurring in questions, the total of directives is five, swearing and taboo language is only once and the last strategies compliment with the total number is two. The most frequently conversational strategies is minimal
response.
The functions of using conversational strategies are: minimal response is for showing agreement, hedges is for showing the speaker’s confidence or unconfidence, tag question is for supporting the data, question is for making response each other, directive is for asking someone to do something, swearing and taboo language is for showing anger and the last compliment is for showing praise to other people.
In this study the writer gives suggestions to next researcher who want to analyze about conversational strategies: use other theory about conversational strategies and use the data that consist of more than two people or conversation among same gender. It will make different and can be enrich our knowledge.
