Abstract

This research deals with the analysis of lexical and grammatical devices to reveal theme in Demi Lovato’s songs. This study constructed by some problems whether categories of lexical and grammatical devices used to reveal theme of songs. This analysis focused on analyzing the theme and meaning of songs through its lexical and grammatical devices. Hopefully, this study will give advantages for students of English Department, especially to help them understand to form theme through lexical and grammatical devices in Demi Lovato’s songs.
This analysis used descriptive method because it is to describe lexical and grammatical meaning of some lexemes and grammatical pattern. The data were taken from an album entitled DEMI 2013 includes fire starter, heart attack, made in the USA, neon lights, and shouldn’t come back. Those are the most hits song among 13 songs in album. The lexical devices found are categorized as noun, verb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, idiom, adverb, modal verb, and determiner. While the grammatical devices found are categorized in the form of article a/an, possessive pronoun, suffix –es/-s, passive voice, objective pronoun, suffix –er, comparative –er, and gerund and some kind of tenses: the simple present tense, the present continuous tense, the present perfect tense, the present perfect continuous tense, the simple past tense, the past continuous tense, the past perfect tense, the simple futuretense and the future continuous tense.
The researcher used theory by Kreidler and Baker to conduct this research. Finally the researcher can found significant lexemes and grammatical pattern, then the theme of songs is revealed.
